Calvin Abueva dropped 26 points and 22 rebounds including the buzzer-beating game winner as the Alaska Aces stayed undefeated with a scintillating 100-98 victory over the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, Tuesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Down by 18 points in the third quarter, Abueva willed his team back into the game. It was only fitting that Alaska’s fate was left in The Beast’s hands in the dying seconds.
With 18.2 seconds, Talk ‘N Text could have won the game with a basket or settled for an overtime period with a miss at the buzzer. However, Jayson Castro attacked with eight seconds left in the game clock. JVee Casio defended him well causing the turnover, which led to Abueva’s game-winning basket on the other end.
Aside from Abueva, five other Aces scored in double-digits for another balanced attack. Talk ‘N Text on the other hand was led by Ryan Reyes with 24 points while rookie Kevin Alas added 15.
Talk ‘N Text was outrebounded 62-40 by Alaska in the game. This made up for their dreary 36% shooting from the field.
The offense of the Texters clicked on all cylinders in the first quarter as they led 28-22 after the first quarter. The Aces cut this lead down to a single point at the half.
The Texters exploded in the third quarter behind the sweet-shooting of Ryan Reyes. The Aces looked like they were dead in the water as they fell behind by 18 points, 75-57, in the third. However, like the first, game the huge lead di not stand until the final buzzer. Behind Abueva’s relentlessness, Alaska went on a 20-5 run to cut Talk ‘N Text’s lead down to just three points at 80-77.
Dondon Hontiveros finally tied the ball game at 84-all. JVee Casio then gave them a three-point lead one the very next play with his own triple from the other side of the floor to force a Talk ‘N Text timeout. During the break, a triple earlier converted by Ranidel De Ocampo was downgraded to a two point conversion for an 87-83 tally in favor of Alaska.
The Tropang Texters knotted the game at 87-all but Abueva announced his return to the ball game by scoring on a layup to give the lead to the Aces again.
