Both Alaska’s Alex Compton and San Miguel Beer’s Leo Austria will make their PBA finals coaching debut in the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup. It has been a long journey for the two who first crossed paths in the league almost a decade ago. 
 
Back in 2006, Austria, who was Welcoat’s head coach, selected Compton as the team’s second import. The American player who played in the MBA and PBL before also served as one of Autria’s assistants. 
 
The two did not find any form of success together but now that they’re on opposite benches, they find themselves competing for the PBA crown jewel. 
 
“Coach Leo did not always have the strongest teams before but now he’s got one and he’s in the finals,” Compton said during the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup finals press conference. “I’m happy for him but I’m genuinely concerned because I know just how good he is.” 
 
Compton, only in his second conference as Alaska’s head coach, had nothing but praise for Austria. 
 
“I thought coach Leo should have been coach of the year when we went 3-15 and I really mean that,” Compton admitted. “We were an expansion team and we only brought up Jay-R Reyes and Jay Sagad and we drafted Jireh (Ibanes) so we didn’t have guys who could put the ball through the basket.” 
 
“But we beat San Miguel and I think we also beat Talk ‘N Text. It was coaching genius,” Compton continued. 
 
“He did an incredible job. One of the things I learned from him was his ability to maximize players. Outside of that, he’s a sincerely nice guy and the players pick that up. They want to be led by someone who’s genuine.”

The Alaska Aces arrange a duel with the San Miguel Beermen in the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup Finals as they defeated the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters 79-76 in Game 6, Sunday night at the Mall of Asia Arena. 
 
Down 76-73 with less than two minutes in the contest, the Aces banked on an old reliable. Dondon Hontiveros turned back the hands of time as he sank back-to-back triples to tie the game and give them the lead. 
 
Needing a three to tie, Rain or Shine got a lot of good looks from Paul Lee and Jeff Chan but their shots failed to hit the mark. With seven seconds left in the game, Rain or Shine had one more shot at extending the series but Chan muffed another three-point shot, which sealed their fate. 
 
Hontiveros was named the Best Player of the Game with 17 points and 6 rebounds. The Cebuano Hotshot made 5 of 9 attempts from deep, all of these came in the final quarter for Alaska’s finishing kick.

MEXICO CITY -- Jessica Eye and Leslie Smith engaged in a spirited slugfest for the better part of the first round, until a right hand by Eye landed squarely on Smith's left ear in the waning seconds of the round on the preliminary card at UFC 180 Saturday in Mexico City Arena. 
 
It split Smith's ear open, sending blood pouring out and covering the side of her face. In between rounds, doctors took a long time to look at the ear and opted to allow Smith to continue. 
 
But not long after the second began, the fighters clinched and Eye then connected with a couple of short rights from close range that opened it again. After another Eye right, referee Herb Dean called time to have the doctors examine it again when the ear was flapping down. 
 
When it was shown on the gigantic video board in the arena, the crowd let out a loud "Ewww!" 
After an examination, Dean stopped it on the advice of the ringside physicians. Smith angrily protested, but Dean had no choice but to stop it at 1:30 of the second, giving Eye the TKO victory in the women's bantamweight bout. 
 
Smith was competitive and landing good shots of her own, but the risk to her health was too great to allow the fight to go forward. 
"When I connected and saw her ear blow up, that became my main target," Eye said. "I was going to keep hitting it until they stopped the fight or it fell off. My goal is to be the first girl in the UFC to get a knockout win. I know I’ll do it. Now I’ve climbed another rung on the ladder, and I’ll look around and see what my options are, but 'Im almost to the top."

Still in search of his first championship in the PBA, Gary David finally went back to his old fiery form as he led the Meralco Bolts to a 90-75 victory over the NLEX Road Warriors. 
 
After averaging only 5.67 points in their first three games, David finally came through for Meralco as he scored 23 points while adding three rebounds, five assists, and two steals. 
 
It was a statement win for the Bolts after dropping a 41-point beatdown against Alaska in their last game. 
 
“Para makalimutan ng mga tao yung talo namin, dapat bumawi. Nag-prepare talaga kami para sa NLEX,” David said after the win. “Nung college pa ako sa Lyceum dun ako naka-experience na parang ganun yung pagkatalo namin.” 
 
David played below his regular minutes in their first three games, averaging less than 18 minutes. In their loss to Alaska David only managed to score 4 points in 19 minutes. Against NLEX, David started and played more than 35 minutes, making up for the absence of erstwhile starter John Wilson.

Moving pictures of himself toying with Manny Pacquiao are beginning to appear in Chris Algieri’s head. 
Three weeks before their face off at around high noon in Macau (Saturday night in the US), Algieri said that he is looking forward to his coronation at The Venetian. 
“I feel way too confident. Way too confident,” Algieri, 30, said in a story that appeared over the weekend in Newsday, the main paper of his native Long Island, New York. 
Algieri was asked what things were keeping him preoccupied as his training for the Nov. 23 clash was about to reach its peak because he’d been reviewing Pacquiao’s last two fights the last few weeks, he answered that he has gone beyond watching videos. 
Weeks of seeing Pacquiao flash his lightning-quick reflexes and dominate Brandon Rios and Tim Bradley has left him sick and tired of watching the Filipino dynamo. 
Algieri swears he has already mastered the gameplan and he is itching to execute it to perfection at the CotaiArena. 
Even one of his trainers believes Algieri is not only ready to rumble physically but raring to do it mentally. 
Keith Trimble, who shares the training duties with long-time cornerman Tim Lane, also told Newsday that Algieri is “so mentally tough that you can’t frustrate him, you can’t get in his head, you can’t psych him out.” 
Going into the final weeks before the big day, both camps have been exchanging barbs with Mike Koncz, Pacquiao’s Canadian adviser boasting that the fight won’t go past six rounds. 
Even Algieri’s promoter, Joe DeGuardia, was caught up with all the hoopla as well, saying that they are very much willing to give Pacquiao a rematch in 2015.

NLEX brings Ginebra's run to a screeching halt

Ginebra was coming off two blowout victories and was hoping to make it three wins in a row, but the combination of NLEX’s Mac Cardona, Asi Taulava, Jonas Villanueva and Aldrech Ramos in the final period surprised the Gin Kings. 
 
The Road Warriors were trailing the Gin Kings, 62-66, going to the fourth, but NLEX was able to pressure Ginebra to committing 19 turnovers and this translated to 19 points for NLEX. 
 
“We had a bad game against Talk n Text and I challenged the players to step up on defense. I do believe they can play ‘D’ on any given night. It proved right tonight,” said NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez in the league's official website. 
 
“I’d like to thank my players for buying my game plan to put the pressure on Ginebra’s ball carriers,” Fernandez added. “Ginebra is averaging 22 assists per game and we really had to stop them from running the triangle by playing man-to-man and man-zone before dropping to zone.” 
 
Cardona scored 25 markers while Jonas Villanueva had 14 points. Nino Canaleta added 13 points for the Road Warriors.

NLEX used a simple yet effective formula to cut erstwhile undefeated Barangay Ginebra down to size: zone defense. 
 
The Road Warriors neutralized the Gin Kings’ dominant frontline and forced them to take outside shots in the payoff canto, enabling them to pull off a stunning 97-81 victory on Wednesday night to get their PBA Philippine Cup campaign back on track at the Araneta Coliseum. 
 
After a battling back-and-forth in the first three quarters, NLEX employed an airtight zone defense that threw Ginebra’s prized twin towers of Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter off-balanced then found its offensive groove just in time in the payoff period to complete one of the tournament’s early stunners. 
 
Guard Mac Cardona led all scorers with 25 points but it was the likes of Jonas Villanueva, Aldrech Ramos, KG Canaleta, Asi Taulava and rookie Jeckster Apinan who teamed up in a decisive attack in the pivotal canto where the Road Warriors outscored the Gin Kings 35-15, highlighted by a back-breaking 19-6 run. 
 
Aside from recovering big time from an 83-101 drubbing dealt by sister team Talk ‘N Text last Friday, NLEX also improved its mark to 2-1, pulling abreast of Ginebra as its latest victim saw its two-game winning streak come to a screeching halt. Rain or Shine also totes a 2-1 card. 
 
Ginebra’s high-flying wingman Chris Ellis tallied 12 of his 19 points in the third canto but could not get his game going, along with the 6-foot-9 Aguilar (17 markers) and the 6-foot-11 Slaughter (13 points and 17 rebounds), in the crunch when the Road Warriors took their defensive tenacity a notch higher. 
 
Tied at the break at 34-all following a defensive battle in the first half, both teams started to heat up in the third canto, with Cardona taking the cudgels for the Road Warriors and Ellis doing the same for the Gin Kings. 
 
But Ginebra, which took a 66-62 lead into the fourth, suddenly turned cold when NLEX locked down defensively behind a zone defense, forcing the Gin Kings to throw bricks one after another while translating every defensive stop into easy buckets. 
 
Canaleta, a former Gin King, drained back-to-back triples, the last sparking a telling 14-1 run in a four-minute stretch, turning a four-point deficit into an 81-72 lead with 6:16 left to play. 
 
A baseline jumper by center Billy Mamaril snapped Ginebra’s scoring drought but NLEX unloaded another 9-2 surge, capped by Ramos’ triple for a whopping 90-76 cushion going to the last 1:46 of play.

Calvin Abueva dropped 26 points and 22 rebounds including the buzzer-beating game winner as the Alaska Aces stayed undefeated with a scintillating 100-98 victory over the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, Tuesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. 
 
Down by 18 points in the third quarter, Abueva willed his team back into the game. It was only fitting that Alaska’s fate was left in The Beast’s hands in the dying seconds. 
 
With 18.2 seconds, Talk ‘N Text could have won the game with a basket or settled for an overtime period with a miss at the buzzer. However, Jayson Castro attacked with eight seconds left in the game clock. JVee Casio defended him well causing the turnover, which led to Abueva’s game-winning basket on the other end. 
 
Aside from Abueva, five other Aces scored in double-digits for another balanced attack. Talk ‘N Text on the other hand was led by Ryan Reyes with 24 points while rookie Kevin Alas added 15. 
 
Talk ‘N Text was outrebounded 62-40 by Alaska in the game. This made up for their dreary 36% shooting from the field. 
 
The offense of the Texters clicked on all cylinders in the first quarter as they led 28-22 after the first quarter. The Aces cut this lead down to a single point at the half. 
 
The Texters exploded in the third quarter behind the sweet-shooting of Ryan Reyes. The Aces looked like they were dead in the water as they fell behind by 18 points, 75-57, in the third. However, like the first, game the huge lead di not stand until the final buzzer. Behind Abueva’s relentlessness, Alaska went on a 20-5 run to cut Talk ‘N Text’s lead down to just three points at 80-77. 
 
Dondon Hontiveros finally tied the ball game at 84-all. JVee Casio then gave them a three-point lead one the very next play with his own triple from the other side of the floor to force a Talk ‘N Text timeout. During the break, a triple earlier converted by Ranidel De Ocampo was downgraded to a two point conversion for an 87-83 tally in favor of Alaska. 
 
The Tropang Texters knotted the game at 87-all but Abueva announced his return to the ball game by scoring on a layup to give the lead to the Aces again.

So the National Fist is now a player in the country's top hoops league. Some might celebrate it, but not me. In my humble opinion, Manny Pacquiao as professional hoops player is a bad idea, and a reflection of the twisted mindset that pervades our society. 
 
Of course, I am a Manny Pacquiao fan, just like most Filipinos. As a boxer, his title-winning odyssey through eight different weight classes was enthralling, and makes all Filipinos justifiably proud. 
 
There is another thing about Pacquiao that I appreciate. He is one of the only people in the country holding professional pool tournaments with big purses. Just last month he held a singles 10 ball event followed by a doubles tournament, in General Santos City that attracted the best players in the world. Another one will take place in December. 
 
I tip my hat to Pacquiao for helping out a sport that is in the doldrums. He should continue this work. 
 
But joining Kia in the PBA? I think he should have never made this move, but sadly, it's indicative of the warped priorities and mentality prevalent in Philippine culture. Let me enumerate the reasons why Manny shouldn't be lacing it up in the PBA and why it's sadly reflective of the flaws in our society.
