Goodbye, IE: Microsoft is dumping the Internet Explorer brand

Microsoft is phasing out its Internet Explorer brand, with Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela confirming at the Microsoft Convergence conference Monday that a new name and brand will be used in Windows 10.<br />

The Verge reports that the new browser — codenamed Project Spartan — could incorporate Microsoft in the name. Capossela revealed research indicating that putting Microsoft in the name increased the browser’s appeal to Chrome users in tests in the U.K.<br />

“Project Spartan is Microsoft’s next generation browser, built just for Windows 10,” Microsoft said in a statement emailed to GeekWire. “We will continue to make Internet Explorer available with Windows 10 for enterprises and other customers who require legacy browser support.”<br />

Quartz notes that Microsoft has some brand rebuilding to do with its browser, pointing out that Internet Explorer 6 was regarded as one of the “worst tech products of all time.” While the product has improved, the brand is now tarnished, and Microsoft is looking to change perceptions with the new name. The new name also comes after longtime IE head Dean Hachamovitch announced plans to leave the company last December.<br />

“I want to be clear: We messed up,” Hachamovitch said at a Microsoft conference in 2006. “We messed up. As committed as we are to the browser, we just didn’t do a good job demonstrating it.”<br />

The Verge says it is unclear when the new name will be revealed. Windows 10 is expected to be released to manufacturers in mid-2015. The Internet Explorer brand is set to remain in some versions of the operating system — mainly for enterprise compatibility — but the new brand will be the primary browser in Windows 10.<br />
<br />
IE remains the top browser in the world, at least when it comes to the desktop.<br />
<br />
According to NetMarketShare, IE’s desktop share stands at about 57 percent, followed by Google’s Chrome (24 percent); Firefox (11 percent) and Safari ( 4 percent).<br />

So the first time we thought we heard about Android “M” it really turned out to be a big misunderstanding, but the name has popped up yet again. Philippine press was treated to the launch of Android One today, and it brought a handful of affordable phones that ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop (which Google still has yet to comment on, but mostly seems to be a big bug fixer more than anything else).<br />
<br />
Unfortunately that’s all we know, and it’s quite obvious the next major update for Android will start with the letter “M.” What isn’t obvious is what its full name will be, what features it will bring and when it’ll be ready for public consumption, but Google’s willingness to begin talking about it suggests they’re hard at work and have likely made significant progress. In the meantime, I think most of us are still waiting for Android 5.0 Lollipop so we’ll worry about that before looking too far ahead.<br />

Microsoft is making it even easier for developers to build Android apps using the company’s own development tools. In a set of broad developer-focused announcements today, Microsoft has launched a preview of an Android emulator that will let developers build and test apps for Google’s platform. The emulator is part of Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2015 release, and it will support a number of features designed to help developers emulate a real device. It’s a surprise move given the many third-party alternatives, but Microsoft seems to be serious about offering developers the ability to properly build and test apps for Android.<br />

In a separate and significant announcement, Microsoft also announced it’s open sourcing .NET, the company’s core software framework. Microsoft will make .NET cross-platform on OS X and Linux, alongside a release on GitHub. It’s arguably a move the software maker could and should have made many years ago, but it’s a significant change that developers will embrace.<br />

Microsoft is clearly hoping its open sourcing of .NET will help attract more developers to its own technologies, and help the company work with the wider industry. It’s also yet another of example of how the company is changing and moving away from its founding idea that consumers should pay for software.<br />
<br />
Finally, Microsoft is also creating a new Visual Studio Community 2013 app that’s a free and fully featured version of Visual Studio. Developers will be able to advantage of extensions and support for building apps across multiple platforms and devices. While Microsoft has offered free versions of Visual Studio before with Express editions, the Community version will eventually replace those and offer a lot more functionality for free.<br />
