Smart, Globe reveal iPhone 6 availability in PH

A week after their respective registration pages for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus went live, Smart Communications and Globe Telecom have announced that Apple’s new handsets will be launched on November 14.<br />
That’s earlier than the iPhone availability in the Philippines the past two years. Recall that the 5s and 5c were rolled out on November 15, 2013. The iPhone 5, on the other hand, was launched on December 15, 2012.<br />
If you’re a Smart subscriber, you can preorder any one of the new iPhone 6 models starting November 7 at this site. Globe customers can register here.<br />
However, both telcos have not revealed their postpaid and prepaid pricing for the devices yet. We believe Smart and Globe will announce their offers next week, though.<br />
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have helped Apple boost its profit 13 percent to $8.5 billion and revenue to $42.1 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter ending September 27, 2014. The devices are Apple’s best-selling iPhones thus far.<br />

NLEX brings Ginebra's run to a screeching halt

Ginebra was coming off two blowout victories and was hoping to make it three wins in a row, but the combination of NLEX’s Mac Cardona, Asi Taulava, Jonas Villanueva and Aldrech Ramos in the final period surprised the Gin Kings.<br />

The Road Warriors were trailing the Gin Kings, 62-66, going to the fourth, but NLEX was able to pressure Ginebra to committing 19 turnovers and this translated to 19 points for NLEX.<br />
<br />
“We had a bad game against Talk n Text and I challenged the players to step up on defense. I do believe they can play ‘D’ on any given night. It proved right tonight,” said NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez in the league's official website.<br />
<br />
“I’d like to thank my players for buying my game plan to put the pressure on Ginebra’s ball carriers,” Fernandez added. “Ginebra is averaging 22 assists per game and we really had to stop them from running the triangle by playing man-to-man and man-zone before dropping to zone.”<br />
<br />
Cardona scored 25 markers while Jonas Villanueva had 14 points. Nino Canaleta added 13 points for the Road Warriors.<br />

NLEX used a simple yet effective formula to cut erstwhile undefeated Barangay Ginebra down to size: zone defense.<br />
<br />
The Road Warriors neutralized the Gin Kings’ dominant frontline and forced them to take outside shots in the payoff canto, enabling them to pull off a stunning 97-81 victory on Wednesday night to get their PBA Philippine Cup campaign back on track at the Araneta Coliseum.<br />
<br />
After a battling back-and-forth in the first three quarters, NLEX employed an airtight zone defense that threw Ginebra’s prized twin towers of Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter off-balanced then found its offensive groove just in time in the payoff period to complete one of the tournament’s early stunners.<br />
<br />
Guard Mac Cardona led all scorers with 25 points but it was the likes of Jonas Villanueva, Aldrech Ramos, KG Canaleta, Asi Taulava and rookie Jeckster Apinan who teamed up in a decisive attack in the pivotal canto where the Road Warriors outscored the Gin Kings 35-15, highlighted by a back-breaking 19-6 run.<br />
<br />
Aside from recovering big time from an 83-101 drubbing dealt by sister team Talk ‘N Text last Friday, NLEX also improved its mark to 2-1, pulling abreast of Ginebra as its latest victim saw its two-game winning streak come to a screeching halt. Rain or Shine also totes a 2-1 card.<br />
<br />
Ginebra’s high-flying wingman Chris Ellis tallied 12 of his 19 points in the third canto but could not get his game going, along with the 6-foot-9 Aguilar (17 markers) and the 6-foot-11 Slaughter (13 points and 17 rebounds), in the crunch when the Road Warriors took their defensive tenacity a notch higher.<br />
<br />
Tied at the break at 34-all following a defensive battle in the first half, both teams started to heat up in the third canto, with Cardona taking the cudgels for the Road Warriors and Ellis doing the same for the Gin Kings.<br />
<br />
But Ginebra, which took a 66-62 lead into the fourth, suddenly turned cold when NLEX locked down defensively behind a zone defense, forcing the Gin Kings to throw bricks one after another while translating every defensive stop into easy buckets.<br />
<br />
Canaleta, a former Gin King, drained back-to-back triples, the last sparking a telling 14-1 run in a four-minute stretch, turning a four-point deficit into an 81-72 lead with 6:16 left to play.<br />
<br />
A baseline jumper by center Billy Mamaril snapped Ginebra’s scoring drought but NLEX unloaded another 9-2 surge, capped by Ramos’ triple for a whopping 90-76 cushion going to the last 1:46 of play.<br />

In Proclamation No. 265,  Malacañang on Monday declared October 31, which falls on a Monday, “a special nonworking day throughout the country.”<br />

The next day, November 1, is All Saints Day, when most Filipinos usually visit their dead. Traditionally, it is also a special nonworking day.<br />
<br />

<br />
The proclamation was signed for President Benigno Aquino III by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr.<br />
<br />
Mr. Aquino said he was declaring October 31 a special nonworking day to “give full opportunity to our people to properly observe the day with all its religious fervor, which invariably requires them to travel to and from different regions of the country.”<br />

Calvin Abueva dropped 26 points and 22 rebounds including the buzzer-beating game winner as the Alaska Aces stayed undefeated with a scintillating 100-98 victory over the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, Tuesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.<br />
<br />
Down by 18 points in the third quarter, Abueva willed his team back into the game. It was only fitting that Alaska’s fate was left in The Beast’s hands in the dying seconds.<br />
<br />
With 18.2 seconds, Talk ‘N Text could have won the game with a basket or settled for an overtime period with a miss at the buzzer. However, Jayson Castro attacked with eight seconds left in the game clock. JVee Casio defended him well causing the turnover, which led to Abueva’s game-winning basket on the other end.<br />
<br />
Aside from Abueva, five other Aces scored in double-digits for another balanced attack. Talk ‘N Text on the other hand was led by Ryan Reyes with 24 points while rookie Kevin Alas added 15.<br />
<br />
Talk ‘N Text was outrebounded 62-40 by Alaska in the game. This made up for their dreary 36% shooting from the field.<br />
<br />
The offense of the Texters clicked on all cylinders in the first quarter as they led 28-22 after the first quarter. The Aces cut this lead down to a single point at the half.<br />
<br />
The Texters exploded in the third quarter behind the sweet-shooting of Ryan Reyes. The Aces looked like they were dead in the water as they fell behind by 18 points, 75-57, in the third. However, like the first, game the huge lead di not stand until the final buzzer. Behind Abueva’s relentlessness, Alaska went on a 20-5 run to cut Talk ‘N Text’s lead down to just three points at 80-77.<br />
<br />
Dondon Hontiveros finally tied the ball game at 84-all. JVee Casio then gave them a three-point lead one the very next play with his own triple from the other side of the floor to force a Talk ‘N Text timeout. During the break, a triple earlier converted by Ranidel De Ocampo was downgraded to a two point conversion for an 87-83 tally in favor of Alaska.<br />
<br />
The Tropang Texters knotted the game at 87-all but Abueva announced his return to the ball game by scoring on a layup to give the lead to the Aces again.<br />

So the National Fist is now a player in the country's top hoops league. Some might celebrate it, but not me. In my humble opinion, Manny Pacquiao as professional hoops player is a bad idea, and a reflection of the twisted mindset that pervades our society.<br />
<br />
Of course, I am a Manny Pacquiao fan, just like most Filipinos. As a boxer, his title-winning odyssey through eight different weight classes was enthralling, and makes all Filipinos justifiably proud.<br />
<br />
There is another thing about Pacquiao that I appreciate. He is one of the only people in the country holding professional pool tournaments with big purses. Just last month he held a singles 10 ball event followed by a doubles tournament, in General Santos City that attracted the best players in the world. Another one will take place in December.<br />
<br />
I tip my hat to Pacquiao for helping out a sport that is in the doldrums. He should continue this work.<br />
<br />
But joining Kia in the PBA? I think he should have never made this move, but sadly, it's indicative of the warped priorities and mentality prevalent in Philippine culture. Let me enumerate the reasons why Manny shouldn't be lacing it up in the PBA and why it's sadly reflective of the flaws in our society.<br />

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) on Tuesday maintained that it will not turn over the P12 million lotto pot to a former overseas Filipino worker who presented a burned ticket that contained the winning combination.<br />
PCSO general manager Jose Ferdinand Rojas II told the House committee on games and amusement that the state lottery firm and the Commission on Audit (COA) have strict rules in validating winning lotto stubs.<br />

The panel, chaired by Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga Jr., was looking into the case of lotto bettor Antonio Failon Mendoza, 46, who claimed to have won the P12,991,600 prize in the Oct. 2 draw.<br />
The ticket, which was reportedly burned by flat iron, was not read by the validating machine.<br />
“Mr. Mendoza’s problem will be closely studied, it has been referred to the PCSO legal department. The recommendation of the legal department is for us to follow the rules regarding the determination of the winning ticket,” Rojas said.<br />

A teary-eyed Mendoza recounted to lawmakers that after he found out that he won the 6/42 lotto, he asked his daughter, Roxanne, to double check the numbers.<br />

However, the stub was grabbed and crumpled by Roxanne’s one-year-old daughter who was sitting on her lap. She ironed the crumpled ticket but damaged it in the process as it was made from thermal paper.<br />
Mendoza brought his family to the House hearing, including his granddaughter.<br />
Barzaga vowed to help them “get what is due them.”<br />

He said the panel would invite COA chief Grace Pulido Tan and members of the PCSO board to shed light on the incident.<br />
<br />
“We want to hear from COA and the PCSO board. There must be something we can do to help this family get what they truly deserve, which is justice and fairness,” the lawmaker said. <br />
