Goodbye, IE: Microsoft is dumping the Internet Explorer brand

Microsoft is phasing out its Internet Explorer brand, with Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela confirming at the Microsoft Convergence conference Monday that a new name and brand will be used in Windows 10.<br />

The Verge reports that the new browser — codenamed Project Spartan — could incorporate Microsoft in the name. Capossela revealed research indicating that putting Microsoft in the name increased the browser’s appeal to Chrome users in tests in the U.K.<br />
<br />
“Project Spartan is Microsoft’s next generation browser, built just for Windows 10,” Microsoft said in a statement emailed to GeekWire. “We will continue to make Internet Explorer available with Windows 10 for enterprises and other customers who require legacy browser support.”<br />
<br />
Quartz notes that Microsoft has some brand rebuilding to do with its browser, pointing out that Internet Explorer 6 was regarded as one of the “worst tech products of all time.” While the product has improved, the brand is now tarnished, and Microsoft is looking to change perceptions with the new name. The new name also comes after longtime IE head Dean Hachamovitch announced plans to leave the company last December.<br />

“I want to be clear: We messed up,” Hachamovitch said at a Microsoft conference in 2006. “We messed up. As committed as we are to the browser, we just didn’t do a good job demonstrating it.”<br />
<br />
The Verge says it is unclear when the new name will be revealed. Windows 10 is expected to be released to manufacturers in mid-2015. The Internet Explorer brand is set to remain in some versions of the operating system — mainly for enterprise compatibility — but the new brand will be the primary browser in Windows 10.<br />
<br />
IE remains the top browser in the world, at least when it comes to the desktop.<br />
<br />
According to NetMarketShare, IE’s desktop share stands at about 57 percent, followed by Google’s Chrome (24 percent); Firefox (11 percent) and Safari ( 4 percent).<br />

Thirty-four of the country’s most beautiful ladies gave their all to leave a mark to the judges and the audience during the Binibining Pilipinas 2015 pageant on Sunday night. The Smart Araneta coliseum thundered with roars of approval from the people cheering for their favorite Binibini. Dancing in five-inch heels, the candidates put on a spectacular show of beauty and talent.<br />

Later, the ladies showcased their evening gowns. Each Binibini looked stunning to the point that the usual boisterous crowd would go silent and just gape at pure Filipina elegance.<br />

"Mirabella" star Julia Barretto marked her 18th birthday on March 10 with a grand celebration held at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel Ballroom, gathering feuding sides of her family in one venue.<br />
<br />
Julia looked regal as she arrived in her red Michael Cinco gown.<br />
<br />
Among those who attended were Julia's father Dennis Padilla, who has been estranged from her mother, Marjorie Barretto; her maternal grandparents Miguel and Inday, who publicly castigated Marjorie in 2013; and her aunt Claudine, with whom the grandparents sided at the height of the feud among the Barretto siblings.<br />
<br />
Another aunt of Julia, Gretchen Barretto, earlier said she would not be able to attend the party as she will be celebrating her birthday -- she turned 45 last March 6 -- in London with her daughter Dominique.<br />
<br />
Gretchen has been disowned by Inday, after she claimed that Claudine is mentally ill and has a history of drug abuse. These allegations were also supported by Marjorie and another Barretto sibling JJ.<br />
<br />
Gretchen is now rumored to have a rift with Marjorie, and has refused to talk about Julia's debut.<br />
<br />
Aside from the controversial Barretto personalities, several other big-name stars attended the highly anticipated event.<br />
<br />
In photos, here's a look at Julia's coming out party, which will air in full on March 29 on ABS-CBN's "Sunday's Best."<br />

MANILA, Philippines - The lawyer wife of actor George Clooney has asked the United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) to call on the Philippine government to issue a public apology for violating the rights of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).<br />
<br />
International human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin-Clooney believes the government violated ICCPR’s Articles 9, 14, 19 and 25 when Arroyo was placed in detention in the presidential suite of the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City despite her medical condition and political status.<br />
<br />
The UNHRC must call for the release of Arroyo to correct the mistreatment, she added.<br />
<br />
Clooney said Arroyo’s release from detention will   “avoid irreparable damage to her health.”<br />
<br />
Arroyo must be temporarily released to allow her to seek medical treatment abroad, she added.<br />
<br />
The UNHRC must also recommend granting Arroyo unrestricted access to means of communications like a mobile phone, Internet and laptop computer, she said.  <br />
